פרשת השבוע - Studies of the Weekly Torah Portion

Each week, Grade 7 students will study about and explore a question related to the Torah portion of the week. This assignment will take place in class during our joint 7A/B session on Thursday morning where we will begin with a brief discussion of the parasha to lay out the issues and some ideas for discussion. Each student will then proceed to write and post his or her response to the discussion question of the week on our class Parashat Hashavu'a blog. I have created a on-line network on twiducate.com for this subject and purpose. Torah.jpg

WARNING - READ THIS BEFORE COMPLETING THE FIRST ASSIGNMENT: Heavy traffic on the twiducate site often causes access to the site and the ability to post to be VERY slow. Therefore, it is strongly advised that you write your assignments in a word processing program (Word, Pages, Google Docs...etc) BEFORE going to post them on the site. Students have been automatically logged out and have lost their work as a result of slow internet or taking too long to write and post. Once you have read the Thinking Question of the Week, open a document in which you will be able to write your response, just to be safe.

Term 1:
During the first term, the weekly assignment will be to post a response/comment to question of the week only. Students will be welcome to comment on each other's posts, but this will not be required. See the specific instructions and requirements for responding in the blog post box itself.

Term 2:
After students have learned the finer points and skills involved in peer editing and feedback, students will be required to apply that knowledge in this subject as well, commenting on the responses written by their classmates. See the specific requirements and instructions for responding AND commenting in the blog post box itself.

Term 3:
For the final term, students will be given the opportunity to come up with the thinking questions to be answered by the class. Students will be asked to read a brief summary of the parasha in advance of class on Thursday in order to come to class prepared to post their questions on the blog for response during the class session. I will provide specific instructions for how to come up with questions in class before the first week of this assignment.

Throughout the year, I will post the weekly assignment on the blog no later than 5:30pm on Wednesday in case any students wish to go and read the parasha summary before class on Thursday. While class time has been allotted for the completion of the assignment, if students need more time, the final deadline for weekly responses is before Shabbat on Friday. Credit for the assignment will be deducted if responses are not posted on time.

The assigned question for the week is a thinking assignment. There really are no right or wrong answers to such questions. The only requirements are that you answer fully and thoughtfully and take the time to proofread your responses carefully. Careless work will also receive credit deductions.

You will see on twiducate that each of you is set up with your own "account" and avatar. You do have permission to set up your personal account photo and quote...etc. there. However, be reminded that your choices need to be appropriate and reflect the topic of study which is the foundation for the blog.
